Our pool to pond conversion began in the summer of 2016 / 2017. My partner Richard had spent a couple of hours cleaning the pool. He did this a lot. We went out and when we returned home a few hours later, the pool was (once again) full of leaves. And that was it, the leaves that broke Richard’s back. He had reached pool maintenance breaking point.

In truth, we didn’t have to talk ourselves into it. Our house is situated under a considerable tree canopy. We only used the pool 3 months of the year. Richard harbored fish farming fantasies, I imagined having my own water lilies and our daughter didn’t put up much of a fight. She was only 6. We considered other options like filling it in but the council required removal of the whole shell, so we decided to turn our pool into a pond.
